Foundation is built using a parallel processing architecture to maximize scalability and robustness. In building Foundation, we isolated each server function and analyzed how it behaved as player loads grew to extremely high volumes. We designed each function susceptible to slowing under large loads to be split off into parallel clusters of servers. This allows each player to have the same fast playing experience regardless of how many players are logged in to the system. It also means a hardware failure on any one server won't affect the performance of other servers in the cluster.
