Big2 is a popular card game in Hong Kong second after Mahjong. It is a card game for 2, 3, or 4 players wherein each player receives 13 cards. The ultimate objective of the game is to be the first player to discard all cards at hand, although the game is quite simple to learn, it is not as easy to master. The strategies for Big2 are a mixture of Chess, Bridge, and Poker.
Big2 has several names. In Australia and in the United States, Big2 is also commonly called as "Deuces," "Big Deuces," and "Thirteen"; while in China, it's called "Da Lao Er" and in the Philippines it's known as "Pusoy Dos".
The Big2 game is called as such since the number 2 is considered the highest ranked. The rank of the cards in descending order is 2, A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and lastly 3. The card suits rankings go, in descending order, spade, heart, clubs then diamonds; making 3 diamonds the lowest card.
The Big2 game starts with the person holding the lowest card. The player then discards a card set that includes the lowest card. Each player, in turn, plays a higher card set or passes. A player also passes if he/she holds fewer cards than the number of cards played in the preceding hand. The cycle of disposing card sets or passing continues until all 3 players pass, then the remaining player starts a new round with any card set. Passing doesn't prevent you from playing subsequent hands in the same round.
To win Big2, the player must have disposed all of his cards. To calculate how much a player lost, he simply counts the number of cards at hand and that will be the amount he is required to pay. The player that won the hand will start the betting, and the betting will follow the direction of play at the table.
